A survey on the pedagogical features of language massive open online courses

Purpose This paper examines the pedagogical features of massive open online courses (MOOCs) for language learning–known as MOOCs. The mainstream pedagogy MOOCs typically involves provision short videos and reading materials self-study; discussion forums, mostly peer-to-peer interaction on course content; machine-graded quizzes self-assessment. For learning, which has been conventionally understood skill development, relevant have yet to be comprehensively surveyed. Design/methodology/approach study surveyed a total 123 from major MOOC platforms. shown in these were identified categorised according types learning activities well participation learners instructors. Findings English was most common taught courses. Over 80% took not more than six hours complete. Most followed typical approach xMOOC delivery, with video watching, auto-graded assessment being activities. Less half included part instructors involved less 30% discussion. Originality/value findings show that, despite technological advances current do differ substantially conventional distance learning. Yet, utilisation computer-assisted technology student base creating virtual social community are opportunities developing learners' proficiency this environment.
